They are still about

Post  ron on Tue Jan 06, 2009 12:56 pm

This is an email I recieved on my website to day

Hi Ron, I`m in a right tizzy. I have a
hedgehog box in the garden and do feed them in the warmer weather but was
convinced they would be in hibernation now. I have been feeding the foxes and
one evening my two dogs were barking madly so I went out to see what was going
on, it was dark and I thought it was a brown rat running away from the fox food.
Part of me thought it was a hedgehog but my hubby told me I was potty and said I
would have to stop feeding if it was attracting the rats. Well I can`t abide
wasting food and so I carried on with chicken and dog biscuits. With the snow we
have had the garden is `lit` up so you can imagine my shock when last night I
found my `rat`, yes a little hedgehog sitting feeding happily at the fox
station. I just have no idea what to do, I phoned my local carer who told me to
catch him in a towel and she would fetch him, but after reading your website I
don`t know what to do. Would I be better off providing another box and maybe just carry on feeding him? How he has survived in this cold weather I`ll never know. I can`t even put water out for him as it freezes in no time at all. Any advise please.
Regards
Chrissy

I would guess it's quite a young one, surely older bigger hedgies are hibernating, it's so cold! It needs catching and weighing at the very least.

Yeah, I agree, Trish. This one needs to be caught and weighed.

It she does not have anything to weigh it on, the rough guide is that it should be bigger than a man's fist rolled up.

Bethany.
