lucy????

Post  Johog on Sun Jan 18, 2009 12:57 pm

as you know lucy is my blind poss brain damaged one!
shes being treated for ear mites and poss ear infection. shes finished a course of anti-biotics, wasn't sure whether to start another course as shes still off balance confused
however.... shes been quilling too and has been scratching, has made a sore patch behind her ear and looks like shes stabbed herself with a quill on one of her back feet, shes not walking on this and is kind of pushing herself around. i don't know whether to cover the foot until it heals and what with?
i don't know whether i should be treating everything at once or one at a time? Unsure

A tricky one - the foot needs sorting, but so does the reason behind the scratching, something is irritating her, how about something to soothe the area behind her ear - aloe vera maybe?

i've bathed her in aveeno oil which is an oatmeal based oil, and that soothes her for a while with the quilling. i tried liquid savlon, germoline and am using ear drops incase its ear mites. i've also trimmed her nails but wasn't sure how far back to cut them. thats why i considered covering her feet up (could also treat the cut at the same time) it might prevent the scratching and give the ears etc a chance to heal up.
theres so much going on with her i'm amazed she still keeps going and she is such a happy little thing i don't want to give up on her.

Embarassed thought about possibly cutting the fingers off some gloves that are too small for my daughter and using med tape (not the stuff that pulls hair) or i have some sticky stitches that i could secure them with confused
i've upped her fluid intake and she seems a bit more contented this evening, although is covered in food where she fell asleep on her back in the bowl!

haven't had resort to bootees yet! her scratching seems to have calmed down, the sore behind her ear looks better and her ears are clearing up. shes still rolling around, although not as much as before and seems more content. she managed to eat some mashed cat food from a flat lid in the night, but am still topping her up by syringe feeding. i hope in the next few days shes actually up on her feet. luck

update on lucy!
shes stopped quilling so is slightly less itchy, shes also left the sore behind her ear alone so that is clearing up nicely.........
upon closer inspection of her ear tonight, thought it should've cleared by now, shes managed to rip half her outer ear off and that was sitting inside the ear, so cleaned it out and removed it, needless to say its looking very very sore Sad No
have bandaged her back feet up so she doesn't claw it adn applied baytril externally.
i'm quite upset that i didn't see this sooner and what can go wrong next Sad
i won't give up on her, as despite everything shes happy and healthy, sounds funny i know!

You are doing a brilliant job with her. Don't feel bad you missed her ear, it's hard to see all of a hedgehog with the habit of curling up! Don't beat yourself up, I reckon if it weren't for you she wouldn't be here.
